Oldborough Manor Community School

Oldborough Manor has gone

I returned to the school for the first time in 32 years to find the lower block was a church and the upper block has been pulled down, it was a building site with a new school called The New Line Learning Academy.

My take Steve - It was about staff bullying children. A chap called Granger knocked me out cold once because I didn't understand the music, and on another occasion dragged me across the entire top corridor by the back of my collar. I did nothing to deserve that treatment. I was young and too scared to tell my father. I have had to live with that ever since. It put me off learning music too. Some staff were inspiring; others were harsh. Today a teacher would go to prison for action which was sometimes common place in the late 60's

Yes I went to a Funeral there 2-3 years ago and that was a bit of a shock, quite weird sitting in the main hall kept wating for the Head master to come out from behind the curtains

Mario - Good call that re Granger... he was the epitomy of the archetypal Jeckyll & Hyde, and to be on the receiving end of that could have profound consequences - He was an arse but I managed to (mostly) keep out of his bad books (singing in the choir and learning a trombone, may have contributed to that). Many's a comment has been left here regarding his bullying - Bad Egg and all that.
Other than that though, I thought all the others were pretty fair and tolerant - especially of me, always getting myself into scrapes and trouble. And I think the school, itself, offered a lot, for the time – I remember Peter Castell giving up part of his summer holiday each year to take a load of us kids fell walking in the Lake District.
Hope you're well - Steve

I have just seen these comments and very much remember Mario being bullied by Mr Grainger, I also remember being very scared of him as he threw the wooden blackboard eraser and chalk at childrens heads. Another teacher I was terrified of was the science teacher Mr Houghton, particuarly when he put an electric shock through us. Mostly, I have fond memories of Oldborough Manor and being friends with Jenny Dennis, Julie Simmonds, Angela Day & Annette Town.
Funnily enough, my parents live in Paynes Lane but I have never been back to visit the school.
