Littleborough Central School (secondary)

Littleborough Central (primary)

I've now got Friends Reunited to add the primary school as well - they don't have a facility for combining them, presumably because it was a pretty unusual arrangement even in those days. It's important to have your name on both, I think, if applicable, and record your date of leaving as the year you moved up to the secondary school as this will help to track down contemporaries who left the primary school to go on to other schools.

I went to Littleborough Central School at the age of four and a half years (1942) although in those days it was known as the Infants Department. The headmistress was Miss Cockroft. The first class you started off in was Miss Whipp, then Miss Butterworth (later Mrs Shepherd, she married Eric Shepherd who was headmaster in the Juniors in the l970s when my children attended} Next was Mrs Halliday, she was a stickler for hygiene, if you did not have a clean handkerchief every day she would supply you with a piece of clean rag which she would pin to your clothes, if anybody sucked their fingers she would make you sit with a dummy in your mouth. Then came Mrs Valentine, who was sister to Mrs Halliday I think. After that you went into the "big hall" or Junior Department - what a culture shock that was.
