Carine High School opened in 1973 and became a Senior high school 3 years later. The original school principal was Mr Fred Marsh, who retired a number of years ago, but remains (I believe) the longest serving and perhaps the best principal the school has had. Due to the large numbers of students in the mid 1970's, Carine High ran 2 'shifts' of school for a year or two, an unusual but practical solution to the demand in the area at the time. The 'early' shift of students attended from 8am - 2pm (approx) and the 'late' shift attended from 10am to 4pm (if my memory serves me). Students bussed in from 'far away' suburbs such as Mullaloo, Craigie, Kallaroo and Padbury, due to the lack of high schools in those areas at the time. Back then, many students were 'classified' among their peers as either 'surfs' (tended to be the majority given the coastal location etc), 'rocks' (nowadays they'd be bogans), or 'skins' (skinheads and punks, mostly of British origin from the far northern suburbs). Back then, the worst 'drug' problem was getting caught smoking a cigarette (tobacco or mull) and Levi's Californians jeans were an approved part of the school uniform for boys. Always with a reputation as one of the finer state high schools in the Perth metro area, Carine has celebrated many victories and achievements in the areas of inter-school sports, debating and performing arts. Carine was one of the few high schools to have its own swimming pool (complete with diving boards) when these were installed in the mid 70's ! To this day, Carine SHS remains one of the best state high schools in WA. Please add to this history (or correct mine), especially for events post 1980 - today. :-)
