The 'school' was originally a palatial home built for Kirkman Finlay - a wealthy Glasgow merchant who made his fortune in the West Indies in the 19th century. The house was built in 1809 next to the ruined Toward Castle, the ancestral home of the Lamont Clan, who were displaced and almost eradicated in the 17th century by the Campbells of Achavoulin, including their other Castle at Ascog on the Isle of Bute - near Rothesay. The new house, named Castle Toward, passed through several hands, including the Coates family, who eventually sold it to Glasgow Corproration in, I think, about 1949 - it was then used as a residential school for distressed Glasgow schoolchildren - I was there for a few months in 1953 to relieve my family in Tollcross who were all quite ill at the time. I have researched the entire history, and put it on the site some yrars ago, but for reasons unknown, it has been lost. If anyone would like a full version of the history, just contact me and I will send it.
