Kilkenny College founded in 1538 A.D. Founded by Piers Butler the Earl of Ormonde in 1538, it had an inauspicious start in that he died within a year. The motto of the College and the crest are an adaptation of the Butler family crest. The Butlers of Ormonde were the most powerful of all the Anglo-Norman families in Ireland and were intermarried with the British Royal family no less than seven times - the most famous liaison being the marriage of Anne Boleyn (a Butler from Carrick-on-Suir to King Henry VIII). The Collegiate School, Celbridge, amalgamated with Kilkenny College in 1973, bringing girls to the College for the first time!! The motto reading 'Comme je trouve' means 'As I Find'; the Butlers were a leading Anglo-Norman family who believed in making the best of themselves and their opportunities. Students today are similarly encouraged to make the best of their opportunities and to do their best.
