Llandrindod Wells High School began its life in 1972, that year being the first time that the new intake from the local Primary schools found themselves within a “new” (at the time) comprehensive school system. The town’s grammar and secondary modern schools were merged under the headship of David Beresford-Williams and, later, Emrys Haycock; and for a period of about 5 years were sited in both of the old schools’ premises. The 1st and 2nd Forms were located in the older secondary modern buildings, with the senior Forms at the Dyffryn Road site of the old Grammar School. After about 5 years, the entire school was merged together at Dyffryn Road, which, with its modern main building and separate Arts & Rural Science blocks and indoor sports-hall, was well equipped to offer good facilities to its 1500 or so pupils. Even then, however, the ubiquitous port-a-cabin classroom was to be found in the grounds of Llandrindod High, some distance from any other classroom. Music classes were its main occupants at the time; probably to ensure that the amateur scratchings and blowings of the school orchestra didn’t distract pupils in the main classrooms! Around 1980 a new block was completed to provide budding musicians with more convivial surroundings and the drama department found itself presented with its own “theatre”. Having left in 1979, I lost touch with the school after that, although I understand that an indoor swimming pool was also added shortly thereafter. In the absence of any previous information posted here, I have stitched together this brief potted history from my own (increasingly poor) memory, and I would welcome any additions and corrections.
