Penrhos College was founded in 1880. The first headmistress was Miss Rosa Hovey. Her brother became Chairman of the Governors and, as he was Head of the School of Tropical Medicine in Liverpool a tradition was set up that the Chairman of Governors was usually Head of the School of Tropical medicine thereafter.
