Amelia Earhart memorial 2003

Children from Burry Port Community Junior School, from left Matthew Johns, eight, Megan Davies, eight, and Tomos John, nine, wear flying helmets as they stand at a commemoration stone during the * 75th anniversary celebrations in Burry Port, S Wales, for one of America's most celebrated aviators, Amelia Earhart, and the flight when she became the first woman to cross the Atlantic by air. The 20-hour 49-minute journey, accompanied by a male pilot and a mechanic, turned all three into instant worldwide celebrities. But Burry Port appears to have won its unlikely place in the annals of aviation history by mistake. The three-strong crew of the Friendship are believed to have always intended to set down in Ireland.
