Attercliffe Road and Staniforth Road, where the red car is turning, were really good shopping places. Just round he corner on Staniforth Road was a cinema (there were lots of cinemas in the area then and the canal runs underneath the road leading to Shirland Lane and the railway line. The canal was mucky then, I hope they've cleaned it up! If you walked further down the road you reached the swimming baths and library. My School, Hamerton Road, used to take us for swimming lessons every week.

Remember the Sarsparilla shop next to Banners in 1950 loved to watch the money being put into chutes and go to to the cash office
