Bobby Davro's father, Bill Nankeville, is pictured here far right. He competed for Great Britain in both the 1948 and 1952 Olympic Games - in the 1,500m. He finished a creditable 6th in 1948. He was also a great friend of Roger Bannister, with whom he set a new world record for the 4x1mile time in 1953 (16mins 41 seconds).
Pictured with their mascot - PC George Smith - are the members of the four-man team representing the British Amateur Athletics Board who leave by air to compete in an athletic meeting in Lahore, Pakistan between 23rd and 25th February. Left to right, Brian Shenton (Polytechnic Harriers), 23 year old Doncaster athlete who is the 200 metre European champion; Jack Crump, the team manager, John Savidge (London A.C. and R.N. and R.M., the 26-year-old holder of the British Putting the Weight and Throwing the Discus; and Bill Nankeville (Walton A.C.) 25-year-old AAA mile champion.

I remember Bill well and the wonderful teaming with Roger. I think because of those years the 1500 is still one of my favourite Olympic events. Good to see Team GB doing so well. I've been in Australia for a long time so sorry Bobby I have never seen any of your work. Indeed a father to be proud of

Bill was one of my schoolboy heroes and in my early teens went to see him run at White City and remember him well running in his faded blue shorts!. A few years back I went to an evening at Spurs when the the double side were being inducted into the Hall of Fame and Bobby Davro a was giving the entertainment and he introduced his Dad and I was amazed when he gave out the name Bill Nankeville. I went over to the table where Bill was sitting and was able to share my memories with him.
