By the 1950s the first high rise hotels had appeared; also, Bournemouth's old trams had given way to trolley-buses, hence the overhead lines. The public swimming baths, the Pavilion Theatre and an indoor bowling green showed the town's commitment to being an all-the-year-round resort.
We used to go swimming on a Monday morning with the school. They never let us have enough time to dry off properly! It was hurry, hurry, hurry

This is how the pier approach should look today. If you look at the flyover and compare it with this picture they don't seem to have achieved much, apart from a very expensive pedestrian crossing, (I have a photo of my wife and I walking across it as you see it there). Why on earth they put that Imax centre there goodness only knows. I remember catching the trolly bus at Jumpers Corner and going to the Baths on a saturday morning. Great times.

Used to go and watch the Aqua Show here each year as a child. Also got my certificate for swimming a mile here, when used to go swimming with the school.

Remember Pier Approach Baths so well, and the wonderful Aqua Show. Went there once a week with school, also went to the Lido pool which was in the hotel at Boscombe, opposite the gardens walk.

School friends and I spent many happy hours at the Pier Approach Baths - thank goodness they are now going to pull down the monstrosity that is the Imax. I also remember going to watch the Aqua Show there during the summer. Also swam in the Bournemouth Schools Swimming Championships at the Pier Approach Baths.

I used to go swimming with the school when I was at St Michael's, and I almost drowned in that pool. I used to have a Mars bar and a hot cup of Bovril when I came out from the vending machine. I think they should put a swimming pool back there, exactly the way it was. It was awesome!
