Newnham College was Cambridge's second college for women, and was built a lot closer to the centre than the first one at Girton. It originally started as just five women students assembling in a house in Cambridge to be tutored by Mrs Jemima Clough; as the establishment grew, it moved into a building in the suburb of Newnham, taking that name for the college.
