History tells us that the Grammar School was founded on a site adjacent to St Helen's church in the last year of the reign of Henry VIII (1547). The founder was the Rev C E Armstrong, M.A of Worcester College, Oxford, one of the four 'Honestissimi Homines' of the parish of Hemsworth. In the early 19th century the Latin, Greek and Hebrew languages were taught free but a charge was made per term for tuition in English, writing and arithmetic. The headmaster in 1834 was a Rev J B Graham and the parish of Hemsworth boasted 937 souls in that year.
