When the Civil War broke out later that year Hampden raised and commanded a regiment of foot in the Parliamentary army - the famous Buckinghamshire Greencoats - and was appointed a member of the Committee of Safety (the parliamentary war cabinet). He was also spoken of as possible successor to the Earl of Essex as Lord General of the Parliamentary Army, but he was mortally wounded at the Battle of Chalgrove Field in Oxfordshire and died on the 24th of June 1643 in the Greyhound Inn at Thame. Perhaps John Hampden's character and achievements are best summed up by his lifelong friend Arthur Goodwin, who wrote, "He was a gallant man, an honest man, an able man and take all, I know not to any man living second... I would lay it to heart that God takes away the best amongst us".
