Leeds, the Town Hall 1894

When Leeds town hall was opened by Queen Victoria, the streets were lined with palm trees and triumphal arches. Designed by Cuthbert Broderick and built between 1853 and 1858, this sumptuous public building was deliberately ambitious in scale, its dignified and spectacular classical lines symbolising Leeds' reputation and position as the leading city of West Riding.

I remember us practising Gilbert & Sullivan opera's at Notre Dame and performing them at the Town Hall. I also remember receiving my GCE certificates there.
I went there a few times to watch a trial in progress.

Used to go to dances there with my parents. Around 1950 - 1960.

Stood and watched the Queen when she visited in 58. My dad took me to the Town Hall to see my three favourite groups who happened to be performing together on my 14th birthday. It was a great birthday surprise and an awesome night for me with the Beegees, Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich and Grapefruit who opened the show.
