Manchester, Market Street 1885

Originally a narrow street of shops, houses and workshops, the redevelopment and widening of Market Street took place between 1822 and 1834 at a cost in excess of £250,000. Our picture was taken about 1885, when the Palmer Oil Co had their Manchester office above J S Moss & Son, and the Manchester Advance & Discount Bank could be found at number 39. In the distance is a parcels delivery van operated by 'Parcelhorse' - not Parcelforce.
