MULBERRY BUSH PUBLIC HOUSE 1974

PA NEWS PHOTO 22/11/74 THE OUTSIDE OF THE MULBERRY BUSH PUBLIC HOUSE AND SURROUNDING BUILDINGS IN BIRMINGHAM, THE DAY AFTER THE IRA BOMB. 21/11/04: A memorial service is taking place, to mark the 30th anniversary of one of mainland Britain's worst terrorist atrocities. Hundreds of people, including survivors, will gather in Birmingham at 4pm to remember the 21 people who died when two bombs ripped through two city centre pubs. Dozens more were injured in the attacks on The Tavern in the Town and the Mulberry Bush on November 21 1974, which were blamed on the IRA and led to reprisal attacks on the city's large Irish community.

I worked for a short while at Ladbrokes in the bottom of the Rotunda-we had lots of bomb alert scares.

I remember this so clearly. That fear of an IRA bomb has never left me.

It caused a massive anti-Irish backlash which was a pity for the many decent hardworking families from Ireland. I know of many Brummies who still bear a grudge.

I had been working in the Rotunda during the 1960's and was appalled by the news of this attack on innocent people. I can never forget the many cruel attacks by IRA terrorists during the 1960's in England.

I was at SoIihull Tech at the time and I remember one of my classmates being in bits the next day because her sister hadn't come home after going to the City Centre the night before. She turned up safe and sound eventually after everyone had panicked We weren't all attached to mobile phones in those days and there was no way of getting in touch to check she was OK.
