I was 14 yrs old when this happened so I guess it may have been a shock, but I probably didn't care much. But now when you look back what a terrible tragedy it was. I'm sure they could have at least saved the victorian facade. It's always a great way for a council to wipe it out if it's old and replace with something doomed to fail.

It was 1974, the same year that Oldham was "moved" from Lancashire to Greater Manchester. Not a good year!

I remember this i think i was playing the at hte market hotel around this time . we used to play upstairs on thursday night this is when Oldham was fulll of live music around the town canter .Its such a shame our generation has taken the market halll and the market away as it has taken the heart out of Oldham

I was actually in hospital when this happened. A policeman friend commented that I was the only person he knew with a cast-iron alibi for that night! My younger sister had just got herself a Saturday job at a sweet-shop in the market - she was devastated to arrive for work and find it burnt down.

i was 18 on the way to work at oldham brewery bottling dept the following morning and one of the firemen said help yourself to a radio ! there was a mountain of water damaged goods , i kept that radio for years lol

i had just left the country 15yrs old when this happened, i used to love oldham market i went there every saturday and was so sorry to hear about it

I remember the very heavy wooden doors , In fact it was my grandfather that made them , unfortunately I never new him , he died from the Spanish Flu , when my father was 11.
