Kept 25 times
Remembered more than a year ago
I was 14 yrs old when this happened so I guess it may have been a shock, but I probably didn't care much. But now when you look back what a terrible tragedy it was. I'm sure they could have at least saved the victorian facade. It's always a great way for a council to wipe it out if it's old and replace with something doomed to fail.

what year was this?
It was 1974, the same year that Oldham was "moved" from Lancashire to Greater Manchester. Not a good year!

I was actually in hospital when this happened. A policeman friend commented that I was the only person he knew with a cast-iron alibi for that night! My younger sister had just got herself a Saturday job at a sweet-shop in the market - she was devastated to arrive for work and find it burnt down.
