The teachers used to contact local landowners for use of their fields for races and tea. They purchased "bags" of goodies from the baker and charged a few shillings to attend.

Places visited included Lauchope House, Dalziell, Jerviston House, Douglas Policies and later they went bu train to places like Inverkip and Gourock.
