Tony Benn celebrating retaining the seat for Labour in the Parliamentary by-election at Bristol south-east. 27/6/99: Benn to stand down as a MP at the next General Election, but Benn stressed that leaving Parliament would not mark the end of his political career. * disclosed his decision in a letter to his constituency Labour Party in Chesterfield.
I met Tony Benn many years ago when I lived at Brislington. I was doing my dusting in my ground floor flat when he just popped his head through my open window and started chatting to me as if I were an old friend. He didn't talk much about politics more about every day things such as bringing up a family etc. He was a lovely person, a man of the working class people. One of the best politicians we have ever had. God bless him.

I agree with Jean; lovely fellow. I met him when the school decided we should all be bussed up to London to meet our MP (Bristol East, at the time.)

When I was an apprentice printer our co-operative printing firm did all the print for the local Labour Party. Tony Benn often came to sort out what he wanted on his leaflets and he would always make the time to chat to us. A very astute character of great intelligence. We could do with a few more like him in Parliament today, whatever party they belong to.

My Dad was a Bristol, and then Avon Councillor, for longer than I care to remember. Tony Benn was a good friend, and Dad worked with him on many election campaigns. Now my brother is involved, and Tony said something about "Being a chip off the old block" A gentleman with strong convictions,as was Dad, .When an opponent said he was a baby during the war, Tony replied he must have been the only person in the airforce wearing nappies!!!
