FAQ's

How did Friends Reunited Dating come about?

In 2002, Friends Reunited started offering a dating service, Online Personals, in conjunction with a third party. While the service was popular, the feedback from Friends Reunited members was that they wanted to make new friends in a trusted, comfortable and friendly environment, so the decision was made to set up its very own dating service and Friends Reunited Dating was launched in September 2003.

Why do people use Friends Reunited Dating?

People use Friends Reunited Dating not only to find true romance, but as an opening to find new friends. The site allows members to share their experiences through the Daters' Diary section, where they can add their tales of dating successes and nightmares, help each other through the dating process by giving hints and tips of dating etiquette and generally comment on the world of dating - on and offline.

It also has an excellent local search facility, which enables users to locate prospective singletons within five miles of their home postcode and as the site is backed by a well established and trusted brand Friends Reunited Dating is considered the dating site for people who don't use dating sites.

How is it different to other dating sites?

Friends Reunited Dating was set up in direct response to requests from the single members of Friends Reunited and today users of the site continue to have direct input into its content and functionality. It's easy to use and members control the dating process rather than the so called 'dating experts'.

Is Friends Reunited Dating just about dating old school friends?

Friends Reunited Dating offers people the opportunity to meet new people in their lives from all walks of life. It is definitely not about dating old school friends as to date there is not one example of people using the site for this purpose.

How much does it cost to use?

It is free to register and view potential partners online, with a fee of £13.95 per month to make contact with other members, roughly half the price of other online competitors. A discounted rate of £24.95 for three months or £39.95 for sixth months is also available.

How does it work?

New visitors to the site register by filling in a short profile about themselves with the option to add a photo. This profile is available for other members to view and make contact if they like what they see. Members can also run a detailed search for potential new friends and partners specifying location, religion, hair colour, eye colour, height, build and ethnic background amongst other criteria. They can also add comments and tips to the Dater's Diary.

How do people get in contact?

There are three ways in which members can contact each other:
  • Click on 'send a wink', which is a short, automatically generated email that simply tells the recipient that someone is interested in them. Members don't have to be a subscriber to use this service.
  • If members want to send a personalised message they need to subscribe. They can then send as many messages as they wish to as many members as they want to within their subscription period. When a message or 'send a wink' is sent, the recipient can opt to have an email notification into their registered email address to prompt them back to the site to read their message.
  • In addition, there is a Friends Messenger service which enables members to communicate in real time to each other, providing both are online and fully subscribed members.
All communication takes place without ever revealing personal email addresses or contact details, to ensure complete confidentiality.

Who uses the site?

Everyone and anyone - there are people as young as 18 and as old as 84 years registered.

How do members know the people they contact are genuine?

The fact that Friends Reunited Dating is the sister site of Friends Reunited means that genuine people use the products and services on offer. However, members are recommended to follow standard procedures when meeting strangers for the first time:
  • Do not give out contact telephone numbers straight away.
  • Use email to establish contact until you're satisfied that they are genuine
  • Do not give anyone your home / work address
  • Always meet in a public area
  • Ensure that you let a friend know where you're going on a date and who with and always give them a contact telephone number
  • Sometimes, you might find it useful to arrange for a friend to phone you after an hour
  • We recommend that you meet for a coffee first rather than evening drinks or dinner
