A Secondary school was built on the site of Staynor Wood and the remaining woodland cleared for agricultural use. Something that would never be allowed today. The early intake consisted of children aged 11 and above from Flaxley Rd. and Selby Abbey Primary schools plus all the surrounding area small, country schools. Early pupils will remember a distinct lack of equipment such as tools, books, and teacher experience. Although for many this was no hardship. The playing fields were newly sown with grass seed and for the first two winters pupils were transported to Foxhill lane playing fields in Brayton for games, boys on one bus and girls on the another.
