Finally, in 1992, the City Polytechnic earned the right to the title of university and the right to award its own degrees – recognition that it had already achieved the necessary status – and became Sheffield Hallam University. In November 2002 the University celebrated the 10th anniversary of becoming a University with a day of special events. Microsoft revealed plans to make Sheffield Hallam the first University in the UK to achieve Microsoft Qualifications Partner Status, personal achievement awards were presented to 21 members of staff who had been nominated and voted on by their peers and a new scholarship scheme that will enable ten local people to attend University who might not otherwise have had the chance was launched.
