I grew up not far from here, in Waterloo, and I rememebr the corner shops, with penny sweet trays-sublime!

I loved these corner shops as they were handy and personable if you didn't mind listening to a neighbour's life story as your ice cream began to melt everywere!More expensive than a supermarket obviously and they smelled of freshly sliced ham and dairy products and vegetables. You could catch up on the latest local news and voice your opinion to the staff. What would a person do without them! In a way they were like the local pub.

wonderful places to meet and chat staff were alwys there to help you every one was treated as a SPECIAL person a chair to sit on and rest while the ham and bacon was freshly cut and the tins of broken biscuits where we all picked our favorites, tea in big wooden chests and when they were empty they were use as packing cases if a family moved home open all hours so much missed by us all another good old English thing gone take out by giant super markets sad days
