This Christmas card was an original water colour by a well-known artist. It took pride of place on the mantelpiece of the Commons Speaker, Betty Boothroyd in 1998. It was from Labour peer, Lord Mason, formerly Roy Mason, and showed Cannon Hall Museum, at Cawthorne, near Barnsley, which houses a permanent exhibition of the Yorkshire Water Colour Society. Each year, for nearly 30 years, Lord Mason, a former Northern Ireland Secretary, has commissioned a local artist to paint up to 15 cards which he sends to his closest friends. The artist this year was Les Packham, 53, of Wakefield, chairman of the Society. It was the fifth Christmas card he had produced for Lord Mason.
