Southampton, Bargate 1955

Bargate was originally built to guard
the main road into Southampton. Over
the years it has been a toll-gate, prison,
guildhall and museum. The original
Norman arch dates back to about 1175,
and the tower was added a century later.
The upper floor used to be
the guildhall.
