Sutton Coldfield initially grew in linear fashion along the Birmingham-Lichfield road. It retained its predominantly rural character until industry began to develop in the 17th and 18th centuries. Mills were built to harness the abundant local water supplies, but when steam power took over from water power, Sutton's industrial life waned; today it is mainly residential.

This top end of Sutton opposite the Cottage Hospital is just the same today as it was then.
