The Star Performers Choose Raleigh! 1950

Advertising posters of the 1950s. The bright colours and adventurous themes of posters of this era echoed the new optimism of Britain following the years of wartime restrictions and rationing.

Raleigh's sense of adventure and optimism continues to this day. All our bikes are designed with the great outdoors firmly in mind! Thanks to Raleigh

I only ever owned the drop-handlebar 'racer' bike.Oh! the problems involved in changing brakeblocks, tyres, inner-tubes, chains (derailleurs a nightmare!). I did once borrow, from a friend of my parents, a rather posh straight-handlebar bike to ride, with youthclub pals, to a country-house weekend. Turning a corner, I rode STRAIGHT INTO another rider's back-wheel, buckling the front one on 'my' bike. Luckily, we managed to straighten it out before I had to give it back to its owner....

At ages 13 thru 15 bikes were a status symbol just like cars are now.I loved self servicing my bike and 'pretending' it had bike insurance like a car has car insurance.Of course it did'nt.Keeping it looking new was very important to me with a wash and polish and oiling every weekend or so.It had to look unused and brand new.Times were still austere in England in the 60's as they had been in previous decades so looking after things was important to maintain maximum value.
