The vast Terracotta Army was one of the most incredible discoveries of the 20th Century. Uncovered by local farmers digging a well, the site turned out to contain the painstakingly crafted terracotta likenesses of over 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses. The figures of warriors represent the army of the First Emperor Qin Shihuangdi, 259-210 B.C., and surround the tomb to protect the emperor in the afterlife.
