I think parties like this were everywhere in Britain on VE Day - certainly in my native Nottingham. Jelly, custard, cakes, sandwiches, flags, bunting, lemonade; and a poke of sweets for every child. My favourites - torpedoes. Tea and sandwiches for the grownups. Paper hats.
