Watford, High Street 1961

The spacious northern end of the High Street, with its central
water garden and carefully tended flowerbeds, marks the area
where the market hall stood until 1853. The modern shopping
area is dominated by the offices of Eastern Electricity on what
was clearly a very warm summer's day, judging by the number of
opened windows. Very few of the male pedestrians, however, are
prepared to divest themselves of their heavy jackets, and while
the ladies appear more comfortable in their summer dresses,
these full-skirted garments required the under support of
crisply starched petticoats for their effect.

Masses of memories with it being 200 yards from where I lived and right where I worked until I was 20. Odeon Cinema; Mocha Bar (real Italian Coffee); Chef Corner cafe and bakery; Woolcott's Tobacconist and sweets. Coffee supplier; Toy Shop; Cookery Nook Cafe; Fine Fare 1st Supermarket in the town; Stan Pike newsagent; The Pond; Top Rank Suite; Parking on the High Street. The parade was the absolute hub of Watford back in the 1950s and 60s.

Peter Spivey Sports Shop; Gaumont Cinema

I worked Lloyds Bank in the High Street for 2 years, 65 -67 and Sun Alliance in Clarendon R 67-69. Worked at Top Rank Suite for a year or so in late 60's. Loved Watford, born there. Knew everyone in town, including a bunch of villains! I was a member of the Beechen Grove Amateur Dramatic society for quite a while, what happy days.
