Clacton on Sea pier was packed to capacity today (Sunday) as sunseekers take advantage of temperatures of 29c. *13/11/2000 Chelmsford Crown Court has been hearing how a pilot stunned holidaymakers when he landed a helicopter on the pier to pick up his wife. Derek Hammond then got out of the helicopter and informed a pier manager that there was no problem and said he had landed to pick his wife up. Mr Hammond, from Broadstairs, in Kent, denies recklessly causing the helicopter to endanger people or property in July 1999. He also denies an alternative charge of negligently causing the helicopter to endanger people or property.
