York, Monk Bar 1955

Monk Bar on Goodramgate is one of the finest gates in the York city walls, and the closest to York Minster. It is vaulted on three floors and still has a working portcullis. The road passes through the walls between the two arches, and the walk around the surviving walls of York is still one of the finest ways to see the city.
